Royal Canadian Mint Coins

Royal Canadian Mint Coins

Pacific Coin and Currency, located at the world-renowned Pacific Mall in Markham, Ontario is recognized as one of Canada’s leading coin dealers. Among their many specialties, they offer a range of coins from the Royal Canadian Mint.

The first coinage for Canada was produced in 1858; it was supplied by the Royal Mint in the United Kingdom. Soon after in 1890, it was proposed that Canada create its own minting facility. The Ottawa Mint was officially opened in 1908 in Ottawa. During the Great Depression, the Ottawa Mint negotiated its independence from the British Royal Mint. In the early 1930’s it was renamed the Royal Canadian Mint and while originally it reported to the Department of Finance in 1969 the Government of Canada restructured the Royal Canadian Mint into its own Crown corporation. The original Ottawa location of the Royal Canadian Mint is now a national historic site.

The Ottawa facility produces bullion in the form of coins, bars, wafers and grain, medals and medallions. At Pacific Coin and Currency we are thrilled to be one of the leading Canadian dealers in these special coins. The Royal Canadian Mint also produces an incredible array of commemorative coins; these coins are not only created using gold, silver or platinum in its composition but also serve as incredible reminders of moments in Canadian history. Many collectors consider them not only coins but actual works of art. Every year the Royal Canadian Mint seems to surpass itself with its creations.

As our past patrons can attest, at Pacific Coin and Currency we only deal with the highest quality items; coins from the Royal Canadian Mint are made from either gold, silver or platinum – here’s an overview of what this means:

Gold Coins

Gold is one of the first precious metals known to mankind. Being a rare commodity it has become one of the most sought after materials in the world and is therefore associated with wealth and grandeur. Gold is a very robust material, it is resistant to tarnish and rust and can survive for thousands of years. Due to its robustness gold is used for coins, jewelry and as a tradable commodity. The Royal Canadian Mint has the honour of being the world’s first refinery to produce a 99.99% pure gold bullion coin in 1982; in 1999 this was surpassed with the Royal Canadian Mint created a coin with 99.999% pure gold.

Silver

Along with gold, silver is considered one of the first five elements ever discovered (the others include: lead, copper and iron). Silver has also been used since ancient times both for currency and for items of ornamentation. Unlike gold, silver does tarnish and requires some maintenance to maintain its luster. Silver is pliable, reflects light and can maintain its integrity in extreme temperatures. The coins created by the Royal Canadian Mint that are available at Pacific Coin and Currency are guaranteed to have a purity level of 99.99%.

Platinum

Platinum is a metal that is silver-white, and while it visually resembles silver it is actually more similar to gold in its composition. Platinum doesn’t tarnish over time and is seen as a very strong material both for jewelry and other items. In 1988 the Royal Canadian Mint issued one of the world’s most famous coins made out of platinum, the fifty dollar Canadian Maple Leaf coin – its purity level was 99.95%.

Whether you are an experienced numismatic, a novice collector or are looking to give a memorable gift to someone, commemorative coins have changed immensely in recent years. The Royal Canadian Mint is leading the world in the creation of innovative coins.

Pacific Coin and Currency offers coins for sale which are also at the leading edge of coin design. The Royal Canadian Mint has developed technology that enables them to create coins that include: holographs, crystal embellishments, gem inserts, high relief and plasma effect. Coins are created to commemorate and memorialize a number of important historical events and milestones in both Canadian and world history.

Whether you are purchasing a coin from Pacific Coin and Currency for yourself to add to your collection or for a loved one for a gift you will easily find something that appeals. In recent years the Royal Canadian Mint has produced coins that have celebrated the beauty of Canada’s nature and wildlife, the sports we like to watch and participate in, a diverse range of holidays that are celebrated in communities across Canada, commemorations of historical events and coins that are fun and whimsical.
